To mark the start of the “A” Division Championships, the sports athletes took the athletes’ oath during the opening ceremony on the 25th of March. Over 150 NYJC athletes will be taking part in 16 different sports. While most of them are participating in teams, we also have athletes who are taking part individually in their respective sports, which include fencing, shooting and rhythmic gymnastics.

We spoke to some of the athletes to find out what are their dos and don’ts and special routines to prepare for their matches.

What is your pre-match routine?

First, I check that I have packed all my apparatus and leotards (my competition attire). Then, I tie up my hair into a neat bun (held into place with bobby pins and lots of gel) and lastly put on make-up!

What do you avoid doing right before the match?

I avoid eating or drinking too much as it is difficult to perform if I am too full.

Is there anything special you do right before your match?

I do basic footwork to warm up, stretching and barre exercises (simple ballet work). I also like to put on a special necklace as I feel it helps to stabilise my thoughts and emotions psychologically.

What is your pre-match routine?

Mostly warm-ups to ensure I have stretched properly. Sometimes, my teammates and I run through our field drills to make sure we know them well.

What do you avoid doing right before the match?

I avoid using a harsh tone and I watch my words when speaking to my teammates. Sometimes the situation can be very tense and it is very easy to say the wrong things and affect their mood.

Is there anything special you do right before your match?

Ensure that we have enough bananas and gummy bears!

What is your pre-match routine?

I do warm-ups and simple throws to familiarise myself with the moves. I also do light sparring with my teammates.

What do you avoid doing right before the match?

I avoid carrying out any strenuous activities to prevent any injuries.

Is there anything special you do right before your match?

I try to calm myself down and visualise myself executing the throws with my opponent. I give myself pep talks mentally to build up my confidence and practise with my teammates.

What is your pre-match routine?

The night before, I will try to have 7-8 hours of sleep. On the match day, I try not to think about the competition until I start preparations to head towards the venue.

What do you avoid doing right before the match?

I avoid thinking about my score or look at the scores of the other athletes. My coach also asks my teammates and I not to use our phones before the match so that we can rest our eyes and hands.

Is there anything special you do right before your match?

I eat a full meal containing carbohydrates at least 2 hours before the match starts. I will arrive at least 1 hour before the match to change into my attire, do warm ups and do dry firing in another room. Around 30 minutes before the match starts, I will listen to a song on repeat, relax and eat some chocolates or sweets. Before the 15-minutes mark, I will proceed to the waiting area and visualise what I will do during the match.

Pray, warm up and then pray again.

What do you avoid doing before the match?

I avoid drinking milk or eating oily food.

Is there anything special you do right before your match?

Wriggle my fingers and toes to make sure they do not tense up

Just like how the Judo boys have made history by entering the finals of the Judo Boys “A” Division, we hope that all our sports teams follow in their footsteps and achieve great results. All the best to every athlete!
